NBS CONFERENCE 2023

Conference “NBS Tanzania 2023: Building an impact economy on Nature Based Solutions” – 16 November 2023, Hyatt Regency, Dar es Salaam

This first edition of the NBS conference Tanzania focused on the issues of carbon impact certification and the potential that this sector represents for environmental conservation, local development and the Tanzanian government.

It was a great success, with over 260 participants and some sixty high-quality speakers from a wide range of backgrounds (private sector, civil society, government). At the opening ceremony, the Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Ms Angela Kairuki, gave a speech underlining the importance that Tanzania attached to the development of this carbon economy, both for financing conservation and for supporting local development. The Swiss ambassador, Didier Chassot, also made a keynote speech at the opening ceremony, announcing that the fight against the impacts of climate change was becoming a strategic priority for Switzerland, and welcoming the participation of two Swiss organisations on the organizing committee.

The sessions and panels that took place throughout the day were extremely lively and of a very high quality. The topics covered ranged from the importance of developing such projects for the development of local communities, through an analysis of the legal framework developed by Tanzania for this sector, to the way in which government stakeholders could take advantage of these developments to fill the funding gaps in nature conservation. One session was devoted to the presentation of 6 projects led by international stakeholders to government stakeholders, in which the ADAP and AxessImpact projects were presented. Finally, the final session was devoted to the interests that the Tanzanian context represents for investors in this sector. Contributions from stakeholders such as the World Bank, the FAO and carbon certification agencies, as well as project developers such as Carbon Tanzania, and government bodies such as the National Carbon Monitoring Centre, ensured the quality of the discussions that took place.

Lively and animated exchanges took place both during the sessions and during the breaks and social events, culminating in the gala dinner held in the evening.

ADAP’s involvement in organising this conference gave the association considerable media exposure, and also enabled its partner Inyonga Beekeepers Association to promote its products to an audience it rarely gets the chance to reach. All the honey brought by IBA was sold in one day (140 litres – a turnover of over one million shillings), and various contacts were made for both honey and mushrooms. The guests of honour also received cans of IBA honey, which also helped to promote the products.

The conference was made possible thanks to sponsorship from a number of organisations, which helped to raise a budget of almost $40,000 to cover organisational costs.

All in all, a great success!
