{"id":35,"date":"2017-08-04T08:10:57","date_gmt":"2017-08-04T06:10:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.adap.ch\/en\/?page_id=35"},"modified":"2022-09-09T10:52:32","modified_gmt":"2022-09-09T08:52:32","slug":"our-story","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.adap.ch\/en\/adap-in-brief\/our-story\/","title":{"rendered":"ADAP&#8217;s story"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"fsn-row full-width-row fsn-6a14a955ec939 light\" style=\"background-repeat:repeat;background-position:left top;background-attachment:scroll;background-size:auto;\"><div class=\"container-fluid\"><div class=\"row\"><div class=\"col-sm-12\"><div class=\"fsn-column-inner fsn-6a14a955ecaef light\"><div class=\"fsn-text fsn-6a14a955ecc3d sous-page\">\n<p>Insufficient integration of local development and nature conservation into traditional cooperation approaches lay at the roots of ADAP\u2019s creation in Geneva in 1997.\u00a0Today we continue our efforts for the return of marginalized, local actors to their legitimate place at the center of local governance.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1680 size-medium alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adap.ch\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/TANZANIE-10-2009-0489-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adap.ch\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/TANZANIE-10-2009-0489-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.adap.ch\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/TANZANIE-10-2009-0489-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.adap.ch\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/TANZANIE-10-2009-0489-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/www.adap.ch\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/TANZANIE-10-2009-0489-640x960.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>ADAP has always worked in\u00a0areas with strong limitations and that are characterized as: landlocked, marginalized by development policies, the last refuges for biodiversity and having populations that often depend on the direct use of natural resources.<\/p>\n<p>Our projects have thus focused on the\u00a0peripheries of protected areas\u00a0(national parks, government reserves), and have often led to support for establishing\u00a0community-protected areas.<\/p>\n<p>ADAP\u2019s first project experiment conducted in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adap.ch\/en\/programme-de-gestion-participative-de-la-faune-dans-le-parc-national-du-bamingui-bangoran\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Central African Republic <\/strong><\/a>from 1997 to 2001 was aimed at supporting areas dedicated to game hunting and managed by the villages in the buffer zones of the Bamingui-Bangoran National Park in the north of the country. Despite promising beginnings marked by a strong interest from local communities in setting up community management, the project had to be abandoned after unrest and insecurity prevented its smooth execution.<\/p>\n<p>Drawing lessons from this first experience and following its integration into the F\u00e9d\u00e9ration genevoise de Coop\u00e9ration (FGC), ADAP developed its activities in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adap.ch\/en\/projet-inyonga\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tanzania<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong> (2001-today), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adap.ch\/en\/projet-mozambique\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Mozambique<\/strong><\/a> (2003-2005), and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adap.ch\/en\/projet-burkina\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Burkina Faso<\/strong><\/a> (2004-2015).<\/p>\n<p>ADAP\u2019s first project from 1997 to 2001 in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.adap.ch\/en\/projet-centrafrique\/\"><strong>Central African Republic<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0supported the creation of game hunting zones to be managed by the villages on the outskirts of Bamingui-Bangoran National Park in the north of the country.\u00a0Despite strong, local interest in community management the project had to be abandoned because of growing unrest and insecurity in the country.<\/p>\n<p>ADAP\u2019s work in Mozambique was hampered by a complicated national post-conflict situation, but the projects in Tanzania and Burkina Faso quickly achieved good results for local development and nature conservation.\u00a0They were designed and implemented over the long term, necessary for the gradual establishment of community management of land and resources.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1674 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adap.ch\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/PC041588-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>ADAP has developed new projects in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.adap.ch\/en\/projet-selous-niassa\/\"><strong>Tanzania\u2019s Selous-Niassa corridor<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(2006-2011), and\u00a0 in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.adap.ch\/en\/projet-madagascar\/\"><strong>Madagascar<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(2016-2019).\u00a0It operates thanks to an important voluntary investment in Switzerland and works with partners in the field to strengthen their capacities towards increasing autonomy.<\/p>\n<p>Since its beginnings, ADAP has initiated\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adap.ch\/en\/activities-in-switzerland\/\"><strong>public awareness campaigns in Geneva<\/strong><\/a>, targeted at its members and the general public.\u00a0These campaigns focused on environmental issues and the complex relationship between conservation and development.\u00a0ADAP continues to participate in Geneva events and organizes conference days, exhibitions, and support evenings.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Insufficient integration of local development and nature conservation into traditional cooperation approaches lay at the roots of ADAP\u2019s creation in Geneva in 1997.\u00a0Today we continue our efforts for the return of marginalized, local actors to their legitimate place at the&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":1147,"parent":2071,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"two_page_speed":[],"footnotes":""},"class_list":["post-35","page","type-page","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry"],"acf":[],"aioseo_notices":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.adap.ch\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/35","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.adap.ch\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.adap.ch\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/page"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.adap.ch\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.adap.ch\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=35"}],"version-history":[{"count":40,"href":"https:\/\/www.adap.ch\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/35\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":2836,"href":"https:\/\/www.adap.ch\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/35\/revisions\/2836"}],"up":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.adap.ch\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/2071"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.adap.ch\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/1147"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.adap.ch\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=35"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
